Jane Austen's much beloved matchmaking character Emma Woodhouse has been portrayed by a wide variety of actresses including Alicia Silverstone, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Beckinsale, the latter of whom would probably fare best in the story's latest incarnation: Emma and the Werewolves.
The novel comes out December 8th (it's available now for the Kindle) from Coscom Entertainment, a small press publisher that focuses on superhero books, comics, and monster-themed fiction. The plot for Emma and the Werewolves is described as follows:
As the ever headstrong Ms. Emma Woodhouse schemes and plots as matchmaker, a dark and deadly terror descends upon Highbury. A series of bestial murders fills the residents with fear as the ever mysterious Mr. Knightley leads a secret life, unknown to all, combating evils not of this Earth.
Carnage and destruction reign throughout the land, and though the residents of Highbury try to attend to day-to-day matters as civilly as possible, »

Nimrod Antal’s Armored feels like a film from a different time; specifically, an action thriller from the late 1990s. It’s the kind of second tier B movie that might have starred Cuba Gooding Jr. in the lead, Michael Keaton in the Dillon role, and Laurence Fishburne in the same role he’s got here. Due to the shrieking chaos of most modern action films, this fact actually proves to be a good thing.
Under the skilled direction of Antal, Armored trades up shaky cam and overcooked editing for expertly shot and nerve-jangling chase sequences that feel inspired by 1970’s crime thrillers. The second string cast, including Dillon, Fishburn, Ulrich and the always dependable Ward, all deliver down-to-earth performances that fit the characters.
Unfortunately, a predictable plot rife with holes and inconsistencies and a script banged together from old heist clichés shoots the movie in the foot before it »

Kate Beckinsale and Zooey Deschanel are featured in some new retro-inspired Absolut ads that sell the hell out of Kate Beckinsale, but not so much the vodka.
Kate has Everybody's Fine in theaters this weekend, and Zooey's (500) Days of Summer was just named the Nbr list of the year's ten best films. It's also on DVD December 22nd, if you have stockings to stuff.
The photos are the work of Ellen von Unwerth, who is better known for her black and white female erotica shots, but she's done gobs of ads before. I'm not a huge fan, so maybe she delves into the bright and colorful more often than I think, but it's not what I'd associate her with. »

Many critics suggest that Everybody's Fine, starring Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale, is just fine -- in the resigned sort of way that most people utter those two words. Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News voices a few quibbles about the script, but in the end concludes that the movie "tries to hit a few too many emotional notes and wrap things up in a bow, but the overall result isn't damaged. Turns out, you can mess up a little bit and still produce a winner." Linda Barnard in the Toronto Star comments: "The story offers some fine, funny touches and just enough sentiment to tug at the heartstrings." Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer calls it a "prickly, bittersweet weeper." Kyle Smith in the New York Post begins his review with an anecdote: "After seeing Everybody's Fine, Paul McCartney offered to write a song that plays over the closing credits. That may be because the whole movie is like a celluloid McCartney tune: warm and playful and sweetly earnest, but lightly funny, too, and crafted with consummate skill." On the other hand, Rick Groen comments in the Toronto Globe and Mail that the movie demonstrates that "even an actor with the gifts of Robert De Niro can't make bland interesting." And Stephen Holden in the New York Times warns that the movie can be hazardous to your health. "The queasiness produced by this sentimental weepie builds into a wave of nausea during its interminable finale," he writes. »

Drew Barrymore, Robert De Niro, Kate Beckensale, and Sam Rockwell. From PatrickMcMullan.com. The Tribeca Film Institute’s annual fall benefit last night in New York City was an all around family affair starring Robert De Niro and his big-screen kids Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale. The evening started off with the premiere of writer-director Kirk Jones's film Everybody’s Fine, in which De Niro plays a recent widower who embarks on an impromptu road trip to connect with his grown children. De Niro introduced the movie, which is a remake of director Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1990 film Stanno Tutti Bene. As he was leaving the stage, Barrymore (on teetering seven-inch heels), Rockwell, and Beckinsale raced up to the actor, threw their arms around him, and declared that it was an absolute delight to be his children. »

The cast of Everybody's Fine hit the red carpet in NYC last night for a special East Coast screening after one last month in La. Drew Barrymore went with a bright sequined number, while Kate Beckinsale posed for photos with her decked out daughter Lily Sheen. Robert De Niro brought along his wife Grace, while the other male star of the film, Sam Rockwell, smiled alongside their director Kirk Jones. Peter Facinelli, fresh from his recent Sirius interview, turned out to chat about his family Christmas plans. Justin Long showed up to support Drew at the afterparty, though it looks like he spent lots of his time chuckling with Sam. The movie itself looks like it will contain a few laughs, judging by an early preview, as one of the many can't-miss movies hitting the big screen this month. This is feel-good Christmas entertainment that looks to be about as bland and non-threatening as its title. Is Robert De Niro just biding time until next summer's Little Fockers?
"All that could redeem this thoroughly foreseeable unfolding [story] would be colorful characters and good acting. Everybody's Fine comes close, but not close enough."
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Though a bit too artful to merit the pejorative 'tearjerker' label, the film is rigorously streamlined to deliver a good emotional uppercut by the end, and purely on the strength of its craft, it connects. But aside from an atypically mannered Robert De Niro, there's very little new to see along the way."
— Andrew Barker, Variety
"...a low point in De Niro's career."
— Robert Wilonsky, Village Voice
"...a calculatedly soppy, seasonally phony Americanized remake of Giuseppe Tornatore's 1990 Stanno Tutti Bene..."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Robert De Niro in Everybody's Fine
Photo: Miramax Films Directed by Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee), Everybody's Fine is this year's family Christmas film. Unfortunately, it never really becomes anything more than a semi-sweet story, good enough for a weekend rental, not necessarily worthy of your theatrical dollar.
Robert De Niro stars as Frank, a man who's just lost his wife. We first meet him as he is preparing for the arrival of his children for a family get together. Unfortunately, after the wine is purchased and a new barbeque is in place, each of them cancels at the last minute. As a result, he decides if they won't come to him, he'll go to them. Against his doctor's wishes, Frank packs up and leaves his home where he eats alone and his only true joy is his garden and sets out on his cross-country journey.
Each visit offers its own difficulties, »

Around 3/4 of the way through Everybody’s Fine — the new dramatic comedy from Kirk Jones that functions as a remake of the Italian film Stanno tutti bene — Robert De Niro’s character Frank Goode has a conversation with a female truck driver as he hitches a ride to visit one of his grown children who have dispersed themselves across the country. The driver acknowledges that she lost her husband to alcoholism, while Goode mentions that he’s “lost” his wife as well.
Actually, Goode has lost everybody important to him. His wife has passed away, and she was the one who the children (played as adults by Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, Austin Lysy and Kate Beckinsale) felt more comfortable communicating with; in her absence, he learns nothing new about his family and almost all threads have been severed. His journey to reacquaint himself with them is motivated by loss and the impending fear of death, »

Welcome to what looks to be a quiet and subdued weekend here at the Reject Report. We have three movies going into wide release -- Armored, Brothers and Everybody's Fine -- but they aren't exactly blanketing the theaters all over North America. It is sure shaping up as being another showdown between The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Blind Side for the box office title. Looking first at Armored, which rolls out in just under 2,000 locations, we have Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno and Skeet Ulrich starring in a movie which according to their official website, is about a band of officers at an armored transport security firm who "risk their lives when they embark on the ultimate heist... against their own company." There is an audience out there for a movie like this, but I don't think we're looking at a big haul here. I would say this movie would make $8 million. Watch »

Everybody's Fine seems tailor-made for those with big hearts, small brains, and a wad of tissues in their pockets. Despite a solid cast and strong source material, this remake of a 1990 film from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore quickly devolves into a mess of treacle and tears.
In the comedy-tinged drama, recently widowed Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has lost touch with his grown children Amy (Kate Beckinsale), Rosie (Drew Barrymore), Robert (Sam Rockwell), and David (Austin Lysy), particularly since the death of his beloved wife. When everyone fails to show up for a family event at his home, Frank decides to head across the country to surprise each of his sons and daughters.
A trip to New York finds artist David absent from his downtown apartment, and Frank's other visits don't go much better. He is quickly shooed away from Amy's Chicago home, and his arrival in Robert's Denver doesn't last much longer. »

It's Like Having 34,000 Kids. And You Better Not Have A Favorite!
In my last Best.Gay.Week.Ever! I included a collage to show the avatars of just a few of our wonderful AfterElton.com readers who make this site such a great, vibrant place. Just a nice way to show my appreciation with no possible repercussions, right?
Wrong! The squabbling between readers started almost immediately along with charges of favoritism and possibly bribes being offered to a certain editor. Honestly, I haven't seen so much arguing since the last Walker family dinner on Brothers & Sisters.
To assuage those hurt feelings and show that I don't have favorites, I've put together an even bigger collage of avatars chosen strictly at random! There are no favorites here! I love all 34,000 Ae readers equally! I swear!
Sadly, one of the most ferocious arguments that broke out over the previous collage was between »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.
