Actor MacCorkindale Has Terminal Cancer

Doctors have given British actor Simon MacCorkindale just three years to live after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The 57-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Jaws 3 and U.K. medical drama Casualty, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2006 after complaining of stomach cramps while filming in Bristol, England.

He only disclosed the terrifying news to his wife of 25 years, Straw Dogs actress Susan George, and the pair kept the cancer a secret while MacCorkindale underwent surgery to remove a section of his bowel.

But just a year later, doctors admitted the disease had spread to his lungs and was incurable.

MacCorkindale has revealed medics have now given him just three years left to live.

He says, "It came as a complete bombshell. I thought I had beaten bowel cancer. The oncologist said I had lung cancer - me, who never smoked a cigarette my whole life and always tried to live a healthy lifestyle.

"We thought no one needed to know because, for the first year or so, we didn't think it was that serious. On a more practical level, showbusiness is a difficult place in which to work when people think you're sick. But the news has been slowly creeping out and at least this way we can tell the story in our own words."

And the actor is adamant he will continue fighting the disease. He adds, "I don't want people to think that I'm pale, losing my hair, losing weight and on the way out. I'm not. I'm as active as I've ever been. I really believe we will get through this." »

Horse Whisperer Author Still Awaiting Kidney Transplant

The author of bestselling novel The Horse Whisperer is still waiting for a kidney transplant - a year after falling seriously ill by eating poisonous mushrooms.

Nicholas Evans and several members of his family were admitted to hospital in Scotland last September after they mistakenly ate a batch of toxic fungi while staying at a country estate.

The writer was told he needed a replacement kidney as a result of the illness - but he is still on the transplant list 12 months later and is forced to undergo 15 hours of kidney dialysis every week.

But he fears medical knowledge of poisonous fungi is limited following the retirement of leading expert Professor Roy Watling ten years ago.

Evans' brother-in-law Gordon-Cumming, who also fell ill from eating the mushrooms, says: "It is a worrying situation. (Watling's) knowledge is going to vanish and once he's gone, he's gone."

Evans, who has sold 15 million copies of the beloved book worldwide, sold the rights to his tale to Robert Redford, who starred in the big screen adaptation alongside a teenage Scarlett Johansson in 1998. »

Spokesperson for Media5, Adam McGregor, says, "(The poster is just) a bit of fun. Paris has a proven ability to laugh at herself. We assume that the agency has taken care of the rights to the image of Paris, but we will ask the question. We're not trying to offend anyone." »

Twilight Bosses Bite Back At Vampire Mag

Movie bosses behind the Twilight franchise are taking legal against the publishers of an unauthorised fanzine - accusing them of using photos from the films without permission.

Executives at Beckett media have released two issues of Twilight, part of the Beckett Teen Sensations series, which features images of the movie's stars, including Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

But bosses at Summit Entertainment, the company behind the vampire series, have filed suit in a bid to shelve the publication.

Papers filed at a U.S. federal court on Friday allege editors at Beckett used promotional photos from the Twilight films without permission in a bid to fill the magazine.

Lawyers for Summit Entertainment claim to have previously sent a cease and desist letter in a bid to stop publication, and are now demanding unspecified damages, according to TMZ.com. »

Franco Eyes Doctorate Degree

Actor James Franco is looking to further his education after completing his masters degree - he's enrolling in a doctorate program.

The studious star is currently studying filmmaking at New York University while juggling writing classes at Columbia University for a masters of fine arts diploma.

But Franco's thirst for knowledge is seemingly insatiable - he's set to obtain his Ph.D. and is checking out courses at Connecticut's prestigious Yale University.

He tells the Yale Daily News, "I'm applying to Ph.D. programs next year so I came out (to Yale) to see what the program was like."

And the 31 year old admits he has endured awkward encounters with fellow students who feel uncomfortable sharing the campus with a celebrity.

He adds, "I had a little incident last night at Columbia that was unpleasant. For the most part the programs I'm in are pretty small. There are about 30 to 40 people in each of my programs. So I know it's not awkward. And I have friends in the programs and all of that. It feels normal to me. It's when I take classes outside of the programs or go to the library where I'm mixing with people that I don't know or don't see in class everyday that I get some weird reactions.

"Columbia has a great library, the Butler Library, and I don't think I can go in there anymore. Because last night I went in, I went into the restroom and this guy was in there and he's like kind of mumbling like, 'You're James Franco, right?' I'm like, 'Yeah, how's it going?' Basically, he didn't get angry. He said he was annoyed with me that I came to the library and that there are girls in the library. He didn't express himself. I think what he meant was that he thought I came to the library to meet young girls and he said it wasn't fair. And I tried to apologise for any disruption my presence had, but he was still annoyed. So I left and I went to the writing building, which is a little more private, but I have to sit there alone in the dark." »

Caine Struck Up Friendship With 'Larry' Olivier

Sir Michael Caine was left awestruck when his Sleuth co-star Lord Laurence Olivier banned him from addressing him by his official title.

The actor admits he was nervous before starring in the 1972 mystery alongside the revered Olivier, who was made a Lord just two years prior.

But Caine insists Olivier remained down-to-earth despite his prestigious status.

He recalls, "Before we started the movie, he sent me a letter - I think he was Lord Olivier then. He sent me a letter saying, 'It's just occurred to me that you may be wondering how to address me because I have this title. From the moment we shake hands for the first time, I will be Larry forever.' Which was nice, it's wonderful - but you think about the necessity to send that letter. You know, I'm Sir Michael Caine and I can't imagine when I started doing (the 2007 remake) Sleuth with Jude Law, sending him a letter saying, 'You may be wondering how to address me, you may call me Michael.' It's amazing."

And the 76 year old will always be grateful to Olivier, who passed away in 1989, for believing in his acting ability.

Caine adds, "We did a scene, Larry and I, basically I had the main part in it. He goes to shoot me and I burst into tears begging him not to kill me on the stairs in Sleuth. When the director said cut, he (Olivier) looked at me and said, 'I thought I had an assistant. I see I have a partner.' That was the greatest compliment ever paid to me as an actor. That was his thinking, because he was the greatest actor we had." »

Izzard Unrecognised As Transvestite In U.S.

British funnyman Eddie Izzard struggles to convince Americans he's a transvestite after toning down his cross-dressing while concentrating on his acting career.

Izzard's prominence has increased in the U.S. after roles in TV series The Riches and 2008 thriller Valkyrie - but he admits the country has yet to acknowledge him as a transvestite.

However, he will soon break out of "boy mode" and show Americans his more colourful side.

Izzard explains, "I tell everyone I'm a transvestite over and over again. I never thought that I would be on TV begging people to believe I'm a transvestite. But I am being strategic about this. I've been in 'boy mode' for the past few years but I know I can be in 'girl mode' if I want to.

"I would know what to do. It's all still there. It's in my toolbox. I am a card-carrying transvestite. Always have been, always will be." »
