Influential programmer for the Nft and London film festival
Anyone whose love of the cinema was burnished by the National Film Theatre in the 1970s and early 80s owes a considerable debt to Ken Wlaschin, who has died aged 75. He not only programmed the theatre for some 15 years, but also directed the London film festival. During that time, he expanded both indefatigably, often in the teeth of financial constraints.
At first, when the Nft had only a single auditorium, he also edited the monthly programme booklet, writing the notes and cropping the photographs himself. By the time he left, there were two auditoriums, a restaurant and a clubroom, putting the Nft (now called the BFI Southbank) on a par with the famous cinematheques of Paris, Brussels and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The festival was also enlarged to well over 130 films and drew journalists from all over the world. »

If last week's TV parodies and shocking angel revelations on Supernatural weren't wild enough, the writers have upped the ante on breaking the fourth wall this week. In "The Real Ghostbusters," Thursday at 9pm, Supernatural super fan Becky tricks Sam and Dean into attending a Supernatural fan convention. Let the inside jokes begin.

We got brief glimpses into the world of the Supernatural book series on the show in "The Monster at the End of This Book" and "Sympathy for the Devil," but now Supernatural is diving head first into fandom. What can we expect to see, and more importantly, what do we want to see? »

After being trapped in TV land, Supernatural sets up a little fan convention this week as Wincest fanfiction writer Becky (guest star Emily Perkins) returns. Not everyone was pleased when Becky first appeared in the fifth season opener "Sympathy For The Devil," since the thought of Sam and Dean hooking up made a lot of fans sick but perhaps her comeback in this week's "The Real Ghostbusters" will shed her in a different light.

Regardless of what others might say, Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. I know that many will say Christmas (be they themselves Christians or secular) but I have to believe that those individuals who do are either sold over on all the presents (secularists) or trying to score points with the big man upstairs by favoring his son birthday (Christians). For me personally, growing up, no holiday would ever match the sheer joy that came with dressing in costume, eating enough candy to induce a diabetic coma, and hurling eggs at my cousin Darrin who just couldn’t seem to catch on that I never found his homemade outfits of Saturday morning cartoon characters from some bygone era twenty years past, interesting, or unique, or fun in any way, shape, or form.
Sadly, in my adult life, I find it’s a bit harder to come across interesting ways »

It's a miserable week for Supernatural fans -- no new episode, but rather a repeat of the Season 5 premiere, "Sympathy for the Devil". But to make up for it, The CW has provided a batch of new photos from Episodes 7 and 8, "The Curious Case Of Dean Winchester" and "Changing Channels", respectively.
First is "The Curious Case...", in which Bobby (Jim Beaver) risks his life by betting 25 years of his life on a poker game run by a witch. Dean tries to save Bobby but ends up drastically aging. The episode was written by Jen Klein (story) and Julie Siege (story and teleplay) with Robert Singer directing.

Chad Everett as Older Dean, Jared Padalecki as Sam, Jim Beaver as Bobby
Next is "Changing Channels", written by Jeremy Carver and directed by Charles Beeson. »

By accepting their destinies as Michael and Satan’s “meat suits” and agreeing to fight as equals, have Dean and Sam just exercised free will, and therefore just altered their futures? Throughout the series, both Dean and Sam’s characters have remained constant, and therefore easily predictable.

I know it's wrong to say, but I'm really loving the Devil this season on Supernatural. Lucifer is a fascinating and compelling character, and whether he's played by Mark Pellegrino or Jared Padalecki, I just want more Lucifer on my screen.
This should come as no surprise, since villains are always more beloved than heroes. Christian Bale didn't win an Oscar for The Dark Knight, but Heath Ledger did. Gossip Girl fans love Chuck Bass but get bored with Dan. And at this year's Emmys, awards were given to a drug dealer, a murderous lawyer, and Lost's Benjamin Linus. »

The following post discusses "Good God, Y'all," the second episode of "Supernatural's" fifth season. All my "Supernatural" features, reviews and interviews are here. Pictures and an episode summary from next week's episode are at the end of this post. "Good God, Y'all" was a pretty solid outing. It's no insult to say it wasn't quite as good as "Sympathy for the Devil," which was just an outstanding episode and probably my second-favorite season-opener of all time (I'd have to give "In My Time of Dying" the top slot in that category). In this week's episode, we not only got a... »

The Winchester brothers continue their jaunt down the Highway to Hell this week with the episode "Good God Y'all". Click through for some spoilers and clips from the episode.
For you sentimental Supernatural fans (is there really any other type?) this week will be a big one as the boys run into Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Jo. Good times. Things are ramping up as the apocalypse begins to take shape, while Bobby gets some bad news from Castiel, kind of reinforcing my theory from the "Sympathy For The Devil" recap that Zacharia will be the only one who can actually heal Bobby.
This season of Supernatural definitely looks like it is going to hang tighter to the mythos, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Supernatural fans should stop over to our Supernatural discussion boards and give their opinions.

(S05E01) It's you chuckle head! You're the Michael Sword! -Zachariah
When we last saw Sam & Dean Winchester, they were staring down a face-to-face meeting with the Big Bad himself, Lucifer. And that's where we pick right back up for the epic and awesome season five opener. So, you'll forgive my fan girl gushing for a bit, but there are very few series that start their fifth season stronger than they did their first, and this episode surpassed a lot of the high expectations I had.
Not only do we get a kick ass fight scene, a possessed Bobby, and a tearful and heartfelt apology for starting Armageddon from Sam, but we finally meet Satan, and surprise, he's a pretty sympathetic fellow.
Basically, it boils down to this: the angles are back, the demons are creating havoc on Earth, everyone's raging for a Apocalyptic war and Dean is The Vessel. »

On last night's fifth season premiere of Supernatural, Sam, Dean, and Bobby had to deal with the ramifications of Lucifer's escape from Hell.
The early days of the Apocalypse is rarely a fun topic - especially as The Devil found a guy named Nick to try and use as a vessel - but the brothers often kept things as light as they could. Below, we've listed a few of our favorite Supernatural quotes from "Sympathy for the Devil."
Dean: What if we win? I'm serious. I mean, screw the angels and the demons and their crap Apocalypse. They want to fight a war, they can find their own planet. This one's ours, and I say they get the hell off of it. We take 'em all on. We kill the Devil. Hell, we even kill Michael if we have to, but we do it our own damn selves. | permalink Bobby: »

The post below contains interviews with "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke and with Jim Beaver, who plays Bobby on the CW show, which had its Season 5 premiere Thursday. It's best if you have seen that episode, "Sympathy for the Devil," before proceeding. Before proceeding, a notice: Do not post all or most of this material on your site. Feel free to excerpt a few paragraphs and link back (that kind of linkage is most welcome). But don't lift the entirety of this post, as one site I won't name recently did (it wasn't a "Supernatural" fan site, by the way).... »

Supernatural kicked off its hotly anticipated fifth season in top form tonight with the episode “Sympathy For The Devil.” More than just an homage to that classic ‘Stones tune, this episode handedly spelled out the overarching plot for Supernatural’s fifth – and perhaps last – season while proving that it’s heart of goofy demonic fun was beating as strong as ever. Let’s recap Supernatural, “Sympathy For The Devil.”
Teaser
Okay, less of a teaser than usual – Sympathy For The Devil begins exactly where season 4 of Supernatural ended. Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) are trapped in a chamber as an entry way to another dimension, one that just so happens to house Lucifer, sears itself into the weathered stone floor. The brothers are overcome by a shrill blast of sound as the entry way nears completion when suddenly – they are on a plane.

Five Torches (Out of Five) Warning: This review contains spoilers for the "Sympathy for the Devil" episode of Supernatural. A fascinating new villain in Lucifer. More hilarious "Wincest" humor. A terrific continuation of the Dean/Sam conflict. Readers of this site know that I think that Supernatural is one of the best (and most underrated) shows on television -- and that the last season was the series' best so far (by far). If last night's fifth season premiere was any indication, it looks as if the show is continuing its winning streak. There are so many things I loved about last night's episode that it's almost difficult to know where to begin. For one, how great is it that Lucifer can't lie -- or chooses not to (or is maybe lying about the whole "can't-lie" thing)? »

The CW continues its first week of fall premieres tonight with the series premiere of The Vampire Diaries and the season 5 premiere of Supernatural, showcasing The CW's supernatural (no pun intended) Thursday night lineup!
First up is The Vampire Diaries, which probably fits somewhere smack in between Twilight and True Blood. Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith which, at it's heart, is a story about two vampire brothers, one good, one evil, both fighting for the soul of a woman named Elena who reminds them both of someone from their past. But through it all not only Elena's soul is at stake, but also the souls of her friends, family, and all of the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.
Below are a few links to preview and review articles we've written over the past few weeks to get you ready for tonight's episode.

They’re baaaaaaaaaack. That’s right, cool kids, the Winchester bros are back to fight them some demons. And, er, the Devil. As you’ll recall, the Devil got himself released at the end of last season, leaving our boys to face the consequences of their actions. Ain’t that a bitch? Supernatural, episode 5.01, “Sympathy for the Devil” makes it premiere later this week in the show’s usual Thursday night timeslot on the CW. And if you’re one of the cool kids, you should be watching it. And if you aren’t, well, you’re not very cool, are you? Here are four clips from the upcoming episode. »

During this past San Diego Comic-Con attendees of the Supernatural panel got a sneak peek at Episode 1 of Season Five, "Sympathy for the Devil". And today, thanks to the wonders of YouTube, everyone else has a chance to see it, too -- but in three slightly chopped-up segments.
As usual with this sort of thing, if you're not caught up, you probably won't want to watch as there are some pretty major spoilers.
In addition, looking ahead to the second episode entitled "Good God Y'All", some promo pics have surfaced over on the Supernatural Totally Rocks blog confirming that Rufus and Ellen are both definitely making a reappearance. Click either of the below photos to see the rest.

More scenes from the season premiere of "Supernatural" is released, showing the first fight between Dean and Sam after the latter broke the seal. Sam keeps apologizing to Dean about what he did but Dean is angry because Sam keeps bringing it up instead of cleaning up the mess. The brothers then agreed to work together in bringing down the devil.
In another clip, Chuck the Prophet mistakenly strikes Sam with a stick because in his vision the Winchester is looking nothing like normal. Chuck then delivers a startling message about Castiel, telling the brothers that the angels have exploded him into pieces. Also, Zachary talks some sense into Dean that the Apocalypse is now, and that they must work together to stop it.
It is believed that the fifth season will be the last of the series. Creator Eric Kripke said he didn't quite expect to see it beyond »
