Noble actors crowned for The King's Speech

It's kind of a slow news day for movies when the big story (so far) is about a new movie concerning Queen Elizabeth II's father. The King's Speech is the title of the project which has just begun filming in England and it stars Colin Firth as King George VI, the monarch who ruled Brittania directly before present day Elizabeth's reign. George inherited the crown after his brother Edward abdicated to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson in 1937.

George was unprepared for the public role that was thrust upon him. He had a speech impediment and to overcome this social liability he undertook lessons from speech therapist Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush.) When the Second World War broke out between England and Germany, King George VI's speeches delivered to the British people via radio served as inspiration and morale boosters.

‘The King’s Speech’ Gets a Great Cast

Director Tom Hooper (John Adams, The Damned United) has been working on a period drama that focuses on the father of Queen Elizabeth II, King George VI.

The film will follow George as “he reluctantly assumes the throne after his brother, Edward, abdicates. Considered unfit to rule and cursed with a nervous stammer, the unprepared monarch turns to an unorthodox speech therapist, Lionel Logue. The two men form an unlikely friendship as King George finds his voice and leads the country into war against the Nazis.”

Currently filming for a 2010 release, The King’s Speech has been written by David Seidler, who has scripted a range of things, from Tucker: The Man and His Dream to The King and I.

A cornucopia of casting has been announced over the weekend for Tom Hooper's The King's Speech, the story of a British monarch with a speech impediment. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush were already cast; they've now been joined by Helena Bonham-Carter, Michael Gambon, Derek Jacobi, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Ehle and Timothy Spall. Yes, it appears that Hooper is determined to find out just how many distinguished British actors he can fit in one film.Firth will be glamming down to play George VI, father to the current Queen and reluctant ascendant to the throne after his brother abdicated to run off and marry an American divorcee and swan about the Riviera buying jewellery. After playing Elizabeth Swann in "Pirates of the Carribean" film series, Keira Knightley has been reported to play Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady". According to U.K.'s Telegraph, she has beaten Scarlett Johansson, who has previously been rumored competing with the British beauty for the role.

Moreover, the site reported that Keira will team up once again with director Joe Wright, with whom she worked together on "Pride and Prejudice". "Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," a friend of the helmer said.

In 2008, Keira Knightley confirmed that she has been auditioned for the role in "My Fair Lady" and begun singing lessons. Capt. Jack Sparrow will sail again!

Although reports of a fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie have been circulating since last fall, it wasn’t until this past Friday that Disney officially announced that it is on their 2011 slate.

Richard Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, was joined by star Johnny Depp at the Disney-centric D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. According to Variety, Depp, dressed as Capt. Sparrow, sailed onstage aboard a pirate ship, and subsequently announced Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would arrive in theaters in the summer of 2011.

In recent weeks, there has been plenty of speculation about the plot and cast of the new film, which is being written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Co-star Geoffrey Rush previously expressed interest in reprising the pirate Barbossa, while Keira Knightley has stated she would not prefer to return to the character of Elizabeth Swann. »
