Parents Guide for
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

The film accuratley portrays naval warfare in the early 1800's without being too graphic or bloody. The battles in this film are realistic and intense.

A ship is fired upon many men are thrown through the air and hit with shrapnel, one man is hit in the chest with shrapnel and a small amount of blood explodes from the exit wound, the operating theatre on the ship is shown with blood all over the floor walls and ceiling screams are heard. A older boy has many splinters of wood sticking out of his arm blood is seen on his hand. Bloody aftermath's are shown briefly.

The same boy has to have his arm amputated in one scene not graphic but we see he face as it happens.

A man has a metal plate put into his head, not to graphic but we see the open wound.

Men are hit by musket fire, no blood.

Many men are thrown into the air by flying cannon balls.

Many bloody corpses are shown.

A man is shot in the head, no blood.

Many men are shot with muskets and pistols in a battle, no blood.

Close quarters fighting is shown with swords, sticks, spears and grenades being used we see everything but there is next to no blood.

Bloody Operating theatre is shown in one scene.

At least 1 "f" word, 8 damns, 4 uses of "My God," 3 of "For God's sakes" and 1 use each of "G-damn" and "Oh God."

Maturin smokes a cigar once (and offers one to Aubrey who declines the offer), while miscellaneous characters smoke (mostly pipes).

A mast suddenly breaks off the Surprise, sending one man into the ocean during a bad storm with high waves. The crew tries to rescue him, but then realize that the mast is dragging behind the ship and starting to turn it over sideways. Reluctantly, Aubrey gives the order to cut the lines to the mast and thus save the ship at the expense of the sailor's life. We last see him floating away in the very high waves.
