PIGHUNT is one of the few films I've seen lately where I honestly did not know where it was going from one scene to the next. Going into the film- I thought it was a mutant pig film, but then it turned into a rural action flick like DELIVERANCE & THE HILLS HAVE EYES. They all of a sudden, we had a wacky lesbian hippie cult that seemed right out of soft core Euro porn from the seventies, and then all of a sudden the mutant pig makes his entrance- and it becomes a horror flick.
Overall- I really liked PIGHUNT. I was on the edge of my seat throughout- which surprised me as I'm not a huge fan of director James Issac's previous directorial outings- like JASON X (Jason in space- bad idea) & SKINWALKERS (which might have been good had it not been cut to a PG-13 crap fest). With this film- it really seems like Issac's has found his voice.
My only real problem with the film is that it takes a good twenty minutes or so to really get going. The first part of the film is full of political commentary- which is not a bad thing but it totally doesn't pay off. I mean- we get a bunch of lead characters that dress in army fatigues, but are not in the army- and then we get a subplot about John's dead uncle being obsessed with the anti-terror policies of the U.S, prisoners at Guantanamo, etc. But all this really goes nowhere- unless there's some kind of political context that I was too stupid to grab.
All in all- I had a great time with PIGHUNT. It's one seriously balls out horror/action hybrid and the audience I saw it with went completely mental towards the end- especially once the mutant pig turns up.
