This scribe and my bowling team - Dread Central’s ‘The Horror Starlets’ comprised of Carlee (Wicked Lake, the upcoming Alluvial) Baker, Heather (The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Alluvial) Snell, Brooke Lewis(iMurders), and Tracy (Dark Woods) Coogan - took part in Tuesday night’s fifth annual non-profit Bowling for Boobies Los Angeles breast cancer event, and we wish to thank those in the horror community who so generously donated to this wonderful cause (see the list below).
Culminating at Jillian’s Hi-Life at Universal City Walk with a red carpet, a night of bowling, and the paparazzi snapping away (see our photo gallery below), the charity - run by founder Stephanie Lahart of the Busted Foundation - raised over $80,000, with our team (who received an award for ‘Best Look’) contributing $5,000 of that total. As they do each year, the proceeds will benefit local Los Angeles women battling breast cancer.

Generally speaking, I’m not really a fan of the whole “animals run amok” genre. There are a few exceptions to the rule, of course, but for the most part, I find them to be somewhat lacking in the horror department. However, having recently witnessed James Isaac’s enjoyable 2008 creature feature “Pig Hunt,” I’ve been secretly craving more animal-related mayhem. Enter Jeong-won Shin’s Korean monster flick “Chaw,” a self-described “dark comedy” about a man-eating boar and the poor schmucks who must contend with it. I’d almost completely forgotten about the film, that is, until I spied a small article about its upcoming Region 1 release over at 24 Frames Per Second. Here’s a lengthy synopsis, courtesy of YesAsia: Shock and fear wash over the quiet, peaceful town of Sameri when ecologist (Soo Ryeon) discovers the body parts of a girl in the mountains. Red Cliff
John Woo hasn’t exactly lit up the screen with his Hollywood films has he? Face/Off is enjoyable I guess but the less said about Windtalkers, Paycheck and even Mission Impossible 2 the better really. It’s a shame because the man is capable of directing action sequences better than anybody else on the planet.
Red Cliff sees John Woo look to Chinese history for inspiration. It’s a sweeping, magnificent epic that looked amazing on the big screen.
The Han dynasty is coming to an end in third century China so as a last ditch attempt for survival the Emperor raises an army that stretches close to a million to attack the two neighbouring kingdoms.
Red Cliff boasts beautiful cinematography and action set pieces. It’s great to see a Director back at the top of his game.
Looks incredible on Blu-Ray.
Leave your brain at the door for this one. »

While there’s been no shortage of horror festivals in recent years, it’s cool to see another one taking shape, this one in Seattle, Wa. If you’re in the area, or you’re up for a road trip, this one looks like it’s going to be worth checking out!
The Maelstrom International Fantastic Film Festival (Mifff from here on out!) is kicking off this weekend, showcasing several independent and international films from our beloved horror genre. You can head over to the Mifff’s official site for more details, but keep on reading for ticket info and scheduling highlights!
Friday night we kick things off with the insanely funny and clever (and award winning) The Revenant (review here), which is about two good buddies. One of them just happens to be falling apart due to being a rotting corpse, but friends are friends and don't discriminate, right? »

Pig Hunt director Jim Isaac sent Fango an update on his film and its current big-screen plans, which include a hectic festival run and a couple of select bookings as the film awaits further North American distribution offers. “We are selling foreign territories, and that’s going very well: Germany, the UK, Japan and more,” Isaac tells Fango.
Pig Hunt’s fest rollout over the next couple of months includes the following:

Sean "The Butcher" Smithson here. Sometime scribe for these here pages at Dread Central, sometime horror host, sometime jungle explorer, sometime exorcist, even sometime astronaut. But this time I'm here reporting on what it's like to help organize events and program films for a horror convention. Or at least, what it was like for me at this particular con, CryptiCon Seattle 2009.
First off, there was an entire season of bi-weekly meetings, where we slowly zeroed in on having the vendors tables sold (it's this that mainly pays for the con expenses), hashed out which guests we'd like to invite (and then the rigmarole of who confirms, second choices, etc), and brainstormed ideas for panels and events. A lot of the things came together slow-as-molasses at first, then built to a torrent of hurry-up-and-get-it-done in the final weeks. For instance, two out of three of my tent pole films, which I »

We just found out at the last minute, but if you’re looking for something scary to do tonight, head on over to the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, where the ninth Brooklyn International Film Festival is in full swing. Tonight, the fest is offering a rare opportunity to catch Jim Isaac’s Pig Hunt on the big screen.
Pig Hunt, in which city slickers on the titular trip encounter vicious rednecks, cult babes and a huge, 3,000-pound, flesheating boar in the backwoods, plays tonight at 9 p.m. For tickets, click here, and see Pig Hunt’s official website here. Also showing tonight at the fest (at 6 p.m.) is Danny Kuchuck and John Weiner’s Cryptic, a Butterfly Effect-esque thriller in which a teenaged girl discovers she can communicate with her younger self via an old mobile phone, and tries to avert her mother’s death. You can order tickets for that one here. »

On July 7th, Maryland's Clutch will release Strange Cousins From The West, their ninth studio album, and the first on their own label, Weathermaker Music. After almost 20 years, Clutch is one of the rare bands that has managed to maintain a loyal fanbase that has been there since the beginning, while gaining new listeners with each new record.
Fangoria Musick caught up with guitarist Tim Sult, one of the key players behind the distinctive Clutch sound, to discuss the new album, the band's change of business model, and to talk a little horror.
James Zahn (Fangoria): After being on numerous labels over the years (Atlantic, Eastwest, Earache, Drt) you guys are going out on your own with Weathermaker Music. I’ve seen the Clutch DVD (Full Fathom Five) that you recently released, and now Strange Cousins From The West will be the first full-length Clutch album released on your own label. »

Pig Hunt - A Dirthead Gothic
Yep, that’s what writer/producer calls his first film collaboration with director Jim Isaac. A Dirthead Gothic. This is a bulls-eye accurate description of Pig Hunt.
Part Deliverence, or Gator Bait, if you realllly want to go there. Part Jaws, or Razorback, if you realllly want to go there again. And part Return Of The Secaucus Seven, which if you’ve never been there you realllly should go.
This would be the easiest way to reference Pig Hunt to fellow movie geeks. You have crazy ass rednecks, hellbent on revenge. You have a crazy ass creature, roaming wild and lethal, unseen by it’s victims until it’s too late. You have a kinda crazy-ass group of good friends, together for a weekend getaway of partying, and maybe even a little soul searching.
More review and a trailer after the break!

Fango hosted the West Coast premiere of director Jim Isaac’s Pig Hunt last night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA, and brought back a handful of photos (see them below), as well as an inherently warm feeling, given the festivities and the raucous audience response the flick received. Kicking off with an actual pig roast and hour-long set by Pig Hunt actor and celebrated blues musician Charlie Musslewhite, the event saw a packed courtyard and house.
On hand were Pig Hunt scripter Robert Mailer Anderson and director Isaac (pictured in first photo, who introduced the screening with Fango), plus cast members Travis Aaron Wade, Tina Huang, Howard Johnson Jr., Trevor Bullock, Rajiv Shah, Jason Foster, Nick Tagas and actor/Primus musician Les Claypool. In five years of hosting horror openings at the Egyptian, this scribe (pictured in third photo with Hayley Dees) has never seen a more positive »

Normally, May 5th is an excuse to get drunk. But this year's Cinco de Mayo was an excuse to get drunk and go on a Pig Hunt . This week, Jim Isaac's ( Jason X , Skinwalkers ) latest film had its West Coast premiere at the wonderful Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. The film centers around a group of friends caught between a rock and a hard place in the middle of the Northern California woods. In this case, the rock is a bunch of crazed hillbillies and the hard place is a monster pig with a taste for human flesh. I asked co-writer and producer Robert Mailer Anderson what inspired him to write the film. "My cousin [and co-writer] Zack and I come from a part of the world that unless you want to make a horror movie, no one will believe what happens there. There's a bunch of hogs up... »

A new trailer for Jim Isaac's latest film Pig Hunt just came our way, and it looks as if it kicks all sorts of ass. Yes, we have a fairly negative Pig Hunt review here on the site, but from what I'm hearing lately from others, it could be way off!
If you live in or around La, you can make up your own mind at a free screening at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, CA, on Tuesday, May 5th. Fangoria has your hook-up for passes.
"If the idea of crazed bible thumping rednecks, dope growing cult women, and a 3,000 lb. swine with a taste for human flesh sounds like a good time at the movies to you, then you ain't gonna be disappointed, neighbor!"
Not sure how well the pig part of this movie is gonna be received in this day and age, but in any event dig »
